I used to believe that “I have so many books at home that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet” was a good excuse not to get a new book and start reading it right away. It turns out, however, that there’s a reason a particular book crosses my desk at a particular time — or, better, that there are windows in the stream of my life when a work has enhanced potency.
